Amethyst

Amethyst is crystalline quartz in colours ranging from pale lilac to deep reddish purple. Amethyst derives its name from the Greek word ‘ametusthos’ which means ‘not intoxicated’. 

One folk tale provides the tale of Dionysus, the God of Intoxication, and a young beautiful maiden, named Amethystos, who refused his advances. Dionysus let loose fierce tigers while Amethystos was making her way to pray to the Goddess Diana. To  protect her from the advancing tigers, Diana turned Amethystos into a statue of pure crystalline Quartz. Astonished by what he had done to Amethystos, he cried the tears of wine in response. It is said that his tears changed the colourless quartz purple, forming Amethyst.
